About Dental Root Canal - Endodontics, Endodontists, Root Canal Specialist
When a patient undergoes root canal therapy the purpose is to eliminate tooth pain by removing the infection. This procedure should be performed by an Endodontist: a specialist in root canal therapy.
Patients needing root canal therapy may notice: substantial, continuous pain (including pain that leads to sleeplessness); an increase in symptoms when lying down; considerable sensitivity to temperatures (hot or cold); tooth pain during chewing or pressure; color change in the affected tooth (darkening); or the emergence of a fistula, or pimple, in the gum tissue.
Even in the absence of any pain a tooth may need root canal therapy. If the damage to the nerve is severe enough a patient’s sense of pain may be lost. Root canal therapy will still be necessary to prevent infection from spreading (without obvious symptoms) throughout the surrounding bone and tissues of the jaw.
Root canal therapy has two main purposes. The first purpose is to thoroughly remove bacterial infections and diseased tissues from the entire tooth and affected root. The second purpose is to fill the hollowed out root with sufficient packing material (all the way to the end of the tooth roots) to prevent further issues.
Many materials and techniques exist for fulfilling these goals, with varying degrees of efficacy. If bad techniques or materials are used, the attending dentist will sacrifice good work for less time. A tooth that has not been thoroughly cleaned and completely filled will be subjected to problems in the future such as continued pain and/or infection. Conscientious patients should request a viewing of the X-ray after root canal therapy is finished. It is best to undergo root canal therapy correctly at a Premium dental practice rather than deal with the problems that result from poor work.
If appropriately performed before it is an emergency, root canal therapy is NOT painful. Waiting until the pain is unbearable is not the correct time to seek treatment. Patients who wait until this point cause themselves unnecessary pain. To avoid a bad experience, seek treatment when symptoms begin; do not wait until it is an emergency!
Ideally, root canal therapy should be performed by a specialist, not a general dentist. This is the normal procedure for a Premium practice such as ours. The amount of time needed and the number of visits is directly related to the skill and experience of the dentist. The Journal of The American Academy of Endodontics regularly shows rates of success of 95% for root canals therapies (single or multiple visit) presuming they are performed by dentists of the same skill level. A good Endodontist can complete your root canal in a one hour visit. Usually, there is no pain during the procedure.
